1966 Chevy C10-Jim J.
When I returned stateside from my Air Force assignment to Ramstein AB in Early 1991, I decided to get a pickup. My original idea was to get a beater that had been worked hard and just drive the wheels off it. After some searching, I found a 66 Fleetside beater, but the owner wanted too much money for it. I continued to search, and found another truck, this time a 65 Stepside that had been souped up a bit. We came to an agreement, so I drove back to tell the 66 owner that I was out of the picture. On the way, I saw a very nice original 1966 Fleetside in a commercial driveway. I remarked to my wife “Why can’t I ever find a nice one like that for sale?” As we passed it, she told me there was a for sale sign in the window. I slammed on the brakes of the rental car we were in, and the guy behind me just waved. Without using all his fingers.
I have since retired from the Air Force, and moved to Texas, but I still have that truck. Next year will be my 50th class reunion, and I could think of nothing more appropriate than fixing that truck to go to the reunion of the Class of 1966. It is still a head turner, but it needs some cosmetic fixing. This picture was taken right after purchase in 1991.
