1985 Chevy C10 – Glenn H.

I bought the truck used in 1987 from the original owner and drove it until it had over 300,000 miles on it. Toward the end of its life, I only used it to haul off the garbage and teach my son Ryan to drive. He was 14 or so at the time. When he was old enough to get his learners permit, we decided to restore it for his first vehicle, and since Ryan was born in 1985, I thought it was cool for the truck to be the same age as him. I had built drag cars for many years and so Ryan was greatly influenced by that style and he made a list of all his “wants” for the rebuild and taped it to the shop wall. Well, I had no intentions or the budget to build the truck of his dreams, nor did I feel good about putting some of his choices in the hands of a 16-year-old young man. So, to Ryan’s minor disappointment, we went back in the direction of the original. We ordered all the parts from LMC…. cowl hood, bar grill, bumpers, mirrors, door handles, carpet, trim, dash cover, headliner, bed cover, you name it and we replaced it. Halfway into the build, everything stopped, when Ryan died in a motorcycle accident after someone pulled out in front of him. Well, you can imagine what I did with his list after that. Silver paint, blown engine, fat tires, and air-bags… everything on the list practical or not. As it turned out, practicality was not the goal… the truck became therapy more than anything else. That was in 2000 and nearly 17 years later, two more minor restores and the truck is still therapy some days. As Lee Brice’s country song goes, some days I just “Drive his truck” and that’s a good day!
