1966 Chevy C20-Kevin T.
I thought everyone would like to see pictures of an actual, un-restored ’66 C-20. I bought this former Camper from the family of the original owner in ’95. This was typical of campers from that era. Where the camper shell was part of bed and over cab. In ’95 I was single with money. After numerous heart to heart talks with Jesus about me finding a ’66 Thunderbird or ’71 Riviera to enjoy, I wound up with the title to 2 ’66 C-10’s a ’66 C-20, ’66 Suburban and a ’65 C-10 Panel truck. Be careful of what you ask for. The Suburban was a small Memphis City School bus. Little 250 6 cylinder, 3 speed manual trans. on steering column [3 on the tree], no power steering, power brakes, radio or A/C. It had about 32,000 miles. The owner of the C-20 and Suburban wanted to sell them to me. I’m into keeping antique vehicles original. His wife was expecting their 4th child. I bought the Suburban from Allen. He used this worn out, blue smoke maker C-20 to drag the Suburban from his back yard to the drive way where a wrecker was waiting. The Suburban tires would not roll. That C-20 dragged that Suburban some 30 yards without straining. He did kill all the mosquitoes in the yard. That was when I bought the C-20. I had to sell the Suburban after I got married and we were expecting our first child. Kept the never wrecked C-20. LMC is my go to place for parts. I’m not financially able to restore ‘Kate’, so I replace parts as needed. I’ve found the folks at LMC are knowledgeable and helpful. Some of my adventures with Kate: had the engine rebuilt, replaced all wiring harnesses then she would not start. then start, then not start. After a year of pulling out what little hair I have left, I located the problem. Turned out to be defective wiring in stater solenoid. Learned how to make a fiberglass patch. Install rear axle seals without them leaking. Learned about different types of auto painting equipment and paint. Rebuild bench seat and visors. Truck still has point ignition system. Master brake is original single cylinder type. Part of truck pre-trip inspection is check brake fluid. Rims are original split rim type [called widow maker]. For tires I went to a big truck tire dealership. They have a machine that will separate split rims safely. Kate’s around town M.P.G. loaded/empty is 9.5. She will get up to 13 M.P.G. as long as you don’t go over 45 MPH. She’ll do high-way speeds, the suspension is not relaxed at those speeds. I average 500 -1,000 miles a year.
