1970 Chevy K5 Blazer – Peter W.

I had an old 72 Blazer in college. Loved that truck. It had a lot of miles and too much rust. I got rid of it and bought a new pick up. I’ve had the pick ups since. Feeling nostalgic I perused the internet to see what was out there. Big mistake, I found one in Nebraska a guy was selling. Typical story 100k plus miles body redone. He wanted $3,500 for it. I contacted him. He said there was this guy, a soldier in Iraq that wanted it when he returned. Good for him he made it home and the guy was good to his word and saved it for him. Good for him, bad for me, I was hooked. I searched up and down and months later found one in Texas. Same story. Lots a miles, rebuilt body. They wanted $6,000. I was ready to buy.

When the other called and said, “you still looking for a Blazer?” I said funny thing I was just about to buy one. He replied “don’t because I have one five minutes from my house with 23 k original miles”. Seemed impossible. He sent me pictures and the name and phone number of the gentleman he got it from. I called the guy and asked, “how is it you’ve had this truck 34 years and only put 23k on it”. He said “my bother and I each bought a brand new one in 1970, his was a CST so if we went anywhere it was in his.” He said he changed the oil in it every year but one. He only put 35 miles on it that year. He loaned it to his niece one year for college. She put 5k on it that year. He put a plow on it to plow and a year later sold the plow. He then parked it and there it sat until Bob found it.

I took a chance after checking Bob’s references. I paid a guy to truck it out. He called me when he picked it up. He said he’d been hauling old cars and trucks for twenty years, this was one of the most original trucks he’d seen. He called again when he was in New Jersey. He said he had a gentleman there was offering him $10,000 to drive it off the truck. I hesitated, but I said, “no you better bring it to me”. He did, he started it up and drove it off the truck. It had bias-ply tires on it when it came. I put new tires and wheels on it. I changed the dash pad, put down some new vinyl on the floors, made some seat covers. I bought a rag top for it and I’ve been driving it from June until October, then I put it away for the winter ever since. It’s a real sweetheart. Here she is….[lmc_story_gallery]
