1970 Ford 100 – Jerry D.
A Long Time Coming…
I had wanted a little 1970 F100 for many years. Finally, I found one in a small south Georgia town. It had a worn out 302 engine and was painted the wrong color but I was able to drive it home to Jacksonville, Florida the same day that I bought it.
As time passed, I started doing things to improve the truck. I replaced the old 302 engine with a rebuilt 1988 roller motor that I used with a carburetor instead of the factory fuel injection. I also added front disc brakes and moved the gas tank from inside the cab to the rear of the frame. I removed the original C4 automatic transmission and put in a rebuilt Ford AOD to have an overdrive.
The rear end was noisy so I had that rebuilt. I did some rewiring, too, but the original factory wiring had never been hacked up by the previous owner, an old man, so it was in surprisingly good shape. I did remove the very limited factory fuse panel and added an aftermarket one with more fuses.
Aside from some interior work to replace the worn out seat covers, not much else was needed. The final thing was to have the truck painted with all Ford colors from the 1970s. At that time, I replaced all of the exterior trim and put in new grille pieces.
I have enjoyed doing all of the work myself except for the painting. The little truck is a joy to drive and I get compliments every time I drive it. A very rewarding adventure, rebuilding this truck.[lmc_story_gallery]
