1969 Chevy Suburban – Chase V.
The “Slambulance”
The “Slambulance” is a 1969 3-door Suburban Ambulance. It was converted into an ambulance in April of 1969 and spent its service life in Hugo, Colorado. From Colorado it went to a private collection in Oregon, where it basically sat in a building for over 30 years.
When we purchased the truck, it was all white, completely stock, VERY sterile looking, had only 25,000 miles & was 100% rust free. It was in wonderful condition and was just begging to be customized.
The transformation into the “Slambulance” began a few years ago. It was important to us to keep all the original ambulance components untouched & operational, so yes, the lights and sirens all work. The first step in the transformation was adding the red paint (“Exploding Head Red”) & then we c-notched the suspension and added the air ride. Billet Specialties custom cut the 20″ wheels for us & we wrapped them in Continental tires. A blue tooth stereo system was added as well, but you won’t see any of it, as it is all hidden away.
Last winter we did the final step, which was a modern driveline. The Slambulance is now powered by a 6.0 liter LS engine from an ’09 Corvette and a 6L80E transmission. It is a beast!
It is a hit wherever we take it & we let people climb in and play all they want. The “smiles per gallon” are great with this truck![lmc_story_gallery]
