1978 Ford Ranger – John F.

My Green 1978 Ford Ranger XLT

I bought this truck brand new out of the showroom in June of 1978. The selling price back then was $6,499.99 and I thought it was a beautiful Truck. Took me 4 years of payments to get it paid off. I drove it for 12 years, to work and back and then took it on vacations to Ohio, West Virginia, and Florida to see relatives. I put a camper shell on the back of it and made some beds to go inside for my two sons to be comfortable on the trips. They had some of their toys and plenty of food and water to keep them happy during the trips. Then after they grew up, the youngest son, Kenny, said to me, Dad, when you buy another truck, would you give me this truck? I said sure son, but it has a lot of miles on it and will need work to keep it running. He said that is find Dad, I want to restore it back to what it was when we use to ride in the back on our family trips. So, I gave him the truck and I bought a car for us to use. He enjoyed the truck and drove it everywhere, to work, to friends houses and he kept it repaired and looking good. But then tragedy set in and his Doctor told him he had colon cancer. His doctor recommended Chemo. So, he took Chemo and fought hard to regain his health, but to no avail. He died at our house at the age of 46. He never got to finish his truck. After he died, I felt useless and heartbroken, I never thought to get his truck and put it under cover, But it sat under the oak trees at his house for 3 years. I drove by one day and seen the truck there all covered in leaves and green moss from the oak trees it was parked under. I made the decision then to get it hauled to my house as I was going to finish my son’s dream and put that truck back in new condition. It may take me the rest of my life to get his done, but I think he will be looking down at me from Heaven as I work on “his” truck and with a big smile on his face.
