2006 Chevy Silverado Z71 – Jim K
After moving here to Boise I needed a 4 wheel drive truck to get around in the winter months. Also with the intent of buying an RV to go camping and enjoy all the great outdoor activities here. I found my Chevy at a used car dealer but it had a few issues, as the previous owner didn’t takes care of it very well. Being a pretty handy guy, I said no biggie I can do brakes, shocks, plugs etc. With only 120,000 miles on it and a reliable 5.3, I was sure it would be with me for a long time. Little did I know just how long it would be. We did buy our RV last winter and on a recent trip this summer the dreaded “check engine” light came on while coming home from our camping trip. Once home I took it to my mechanic and it was the knock sensor code. I had him clear it and investigate further. Well one thing lead to another and he found 3 pistons with wrist pins that were going bad, a head gasket that was beginning to show signs of leaking and a rear main seal seeping. Guess the truck never pulled a trailer before, so it was a bit cranky. Rather than getting rid of it for a $650/month payment for 6 years, I took 10K out of my 401K and had him pull out the engine and do a full rebuild, top to bottom. I put in a new Crane RV/Towing cam and upgraded the transmission to HD status. I now have a new truck which will be with me for quite awhile. Thanks to the guys and gals at LMC for reminding me to Keep Generations on the Road. I will continue do little upgrades on the body and customize as the years by with their help.
