That Has Potential

When I was 16 my friends and I would love to go to the Turnpike and run 1/4 miles. I had a Chevy celebrity, so I wasn’t turning any heads. I went to go look at an ’89 s10 with a 305 heart. When I got there, it was just that, a small truck with a new heart. Not in great shape, wiring nightmare. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted a rotting 1970 4×4 Orange and White pickup. It was rutted so bad, I could see through the bed sides. I said to the guy “How much for that rig?” Seller, “Wait, you want that over there, and not this truck?” I said “This is a junk of $%!+, THAT HAS POTENTIAL.” The guy laughed, and as I looked it over, I started to get anxiety of how bad the body was. He had new doors and a new bed read to go with it. Back then, now 29 years ago, he wanted $2500, we settled on 2100 because it had a rebuilt 4 bolt Main with ram headers(best part Haha). I drove the truck home with the bed strapped on the back. I hid the truck at my buddy’s house for a year, till his parents said to get the junk of crap out of their yard, Haha. When I brought it home, my dad was furious that I spent all my working money in this junk. Until one day someone saw it from the road amd offered $3k on the spot as is, that’s when my father knew I had not made a horrible decision. Every day I had, night and day, I worked on this truck with my buddies, sometimes till 2-3am, even in the snow with a tarp over the truck. I saved, bought parts. Saved more and finally had the welding done, then I saved up for the final paint job. I kick myself to this day that I didn’t keep it Orange and White, but the blue metal flake I chose, is a head turner at every show.
