1987 Chevy Silverado – Nick M.
We had a couple of older square bodies on the farm growing up. But, the ‘one’ that got me hooked was my Dad’s 1977 K10 Silverado, black with buck skin interior. It was my favorite truck, always loved riding in it, I have a lot of good memories being with my Dad. But again, I was hooked and wanted one of my own! As soon as I got close enough to driving age, I started saving and looking for my own square body. It turned out to be a fruitless endeavor since everything in the north east was essentially a rust bucket.
Fast forward to 2021. I was finally in a position where I could not only pick something up, but also store it inside for the winter. I found this beauty, a 1987 Silverado, under 100K on the clock and an original body that only got a fresh paint job, and a new GM crate motor and transmission. I’m the 5th owner, and this thing was babied and pretty well taken care of, a couple of minor things, but what else would you expect for a 35 year old truck? What was most attractive about this truck though, it had never seen road salt in its entire existence and it showed. I’ve had it for 2 years, and can happily report she still has yet to see salty wintry New England streets. The burgundy interior was a little tough, but got a nice refresher with a new seat, dash pad, gauges, headliner, carpet, and radio.
My Dad and I were best friends, sadly he passed a little over a decade ago, but driving around in my truck takes me right back to all the days when I was a little guy in the passenger seat. Or the times watching him fix his and teaching me what he was doing. For so many folks, these trucks are so much more than a vehicle. I know for me, it’s not only something I love to drive and tinker with, but something that keeps me close to my oldest buddy.
