During nursing school, a good friend now brother introduced me to these trucks. He had a 1963 C10 he traded to me for some stereo equipment I had…. I had a lot of fun driving that truck till it broke the frame, so I started hunting for another. Right after graduating nursing school, I found my ’64 GMC at an oilfield shop in Odessa, TX. My mom and dad were not quite supportive of my purchase lol. Well, I bought him and drove him, it had a 292 I6 4 speed granny. I drove the heck out of him minus a couple blown up radiators and miscellaneous break downs (e.g. pushing him down parking garage ramps to clutch start him is 1). Well, over the years working on him, I went first to the hot rod build, then pretty dream truck’s build, finally just a good solid daily driver *chuckles* (25 years to date, 11 different engines ROTFLMAO). That is another story in itself. Final build, I settled on a 2006 GMC Vortec 8.1 engine with an Allison 6 speed. The 8.1 fits the engine compartment pretty tight, but I was able to use the big block stands from the ’67-’71 Chevy trucks to make this happen. Yes, the Allison will clear the 4 speed floor pans. I recently drove to DFW and back home for his initial shake down run other than around the block and he did great. The body and frame are mostly original. Front cradle, rear suspension, and axle, all factory GMC parts. I did my own custom interior and dash and it’s turning out how I like it, comfortable and solid. I made a lot of mistakes in doing things over the years, but I have learned from every one of them (sometimes a project goes three build and design phases before I am happy)… I love this truck and my wife calls him the mistress (also, she gets him when I am gone lol).
