I spied this old truck in one of my cousin’s farm buildings during a visit to Iowa in the summer 2021. My wife and I had just visited a High School friend of mine and he had two old trucks in his driveway that he planned to restore. My wife said, “I like old trucks. I think you should make a truck your next project.” Well, that Christmas, we drove the 1,600 miles round trip to Iowa to trailer the truck home. My uncle, Papa Ray, had operated a farm in Iowa and bought the truck from a neighboring farmer with every intention to restore it. He never got around to it and since he is now in his late 80’s, he isn’t going to get it done. Papa Ray was thrilled with the idea of me restoring it so he gave us the truck with his blessings and the work began. I wanted to be able to drive the truck back to Iowa to show the finished restoration to my uncle as well as make it reliable enough to drive daily so I decided to Restomod the truck. I started with a new frame and chassis, LS3 motor, and a 4L65 transmission. I also included as many modern amenities as possible including mounting shoulder safety belts, backup lights, bluetooth radio, comfortable seats, and air conditioning. I used LED lighting throughout as well as additional lighting in the rear of the truck to make it more visible. The wood used in the bed of the truck came from a hickory tree that I cut down on our property. Even though I made the truck more comfortable, my wife wanted to keep the look of the truck true to its original style. White wall tires and a paint similar to the original color, Juniper Green, made it complete. I can’t wait to see the look on Papa Ray’s face when he sees it!
