I was born in 1966 in Columbus, MS. At that time my Pop, a fireman for the city, was driving a baby blue 1963 Chevy C-10 pick-up. He started carrying me fishing with him when I was around 7 years old. His ’63 had an eight-track tape player in it and every time we went fishing, he would pop in a Conway Twitty tape. He told me that his Dad had bought a truck like his when he was a teenager. My grandfather was a road grader on a road construction crew and my Dad worked with him building roads all over Alabama in the mid 1950’s. Fast forward to my Sophomore year in High School when my Pop bought a Texas Longhorn orange 1966 C-10. He only let me drive it a few times because that was his most prized possession at that time. Years later, my Pop suffered a stoke and 2 brain bleeds. He survived but was left paralyzed on his right side and had to live the rest of his life in a nursing home. He gave me his ’66 after it had sat up for around 12 years. The bed had a large dent on one side due to a large limb falling on it during Hurricane Katrina. The body was badly rusted and the motor had not been cranked in years. So, with my Pop’s blessing I sold his truck to his brother who owned a body shop in Vernon, AL. I always wanted a truck like Pop’s that looked good and ran hood. I got married in 2011 and located one at a hood price. After looking at it, I noticed a frown on my wife’s face. I asked her what was wrong and she said she wanted me to buy her another vehicle instead of this old truck. I remember thinking to myself “Oh, this is what it’s like to be married.” I didn’t buy the truck and for few years, I thought that my dream of owning one was just a dream. About 4 years later, my wife called me at work one day. I asked her what she needed and to my surprise she said; “I found a truck like your Pop’s for sale in AL.” We went to look at it and the guy gave me a great price on it… A red 1965 Chevy C-10 just like Pop’s. It already had a souped up 350 engine and ran great. I bought a slew of replacement parts from LMC: front and rear bumper, window felt kits, body side molding kit, wood bed kit, replacement tail lights, replacement glove box, replacement rubber floor cover, replacement instrument panel glass, replacement rear window molding, etc. I had to find a donor hood and doors to replace the badly rusted ones that were on it. I had a new Holley 4 barrel carb, new spark plug, new red plug wires, new Chevy valve covers, new 3 row radiator, all installed. I also had the truck painted in victory red paint. I bought 4 cast aluminum rims from a guy on Craigslist and bought 4 new Goodyear tires to be mounted on these rims. At the age of 55, I finally got my dream truck… a red 1965 C-10 just like Pop’s. Everytime that I drive it, my mind has a picture of my Pop smiling at me while popping that tape into his eight-track tape player… what a wonderful lifelong memory to have. 👍
