In the summer of 2021, I decided to make my life about old bump/dentside trucks. I happened to drive by a junkyard and out front sat a 1972 Camper Special ready to meet its fate! I decided to make it my best interest to save this beautiful machine and asked if it was for sale. At first, they were hesitant to sell it to a 16-year-old kid, but eventually they gave in and told me they wanted $4,000! I decided to turn down the offer and go about looking for other trucks of the similar year. With no luck, I realized I had to go back and try to negotiate some kind of payment plan to make this truck mine. Eventually, I got the owner of this junkyard to come talk to me and we decided $2,000 was the best price. This was an offer I could work with. So, that summer I worked my tail off saving up to buy this truck. I drove by this truck daily to give me motivation to get it done. Finally, the day came! I brought it home and got straight to work. As all 50-year-old trucks are, this one in particular had its quirks and problems. My dad and I spent hours and hours and thousands of dollars trying to bring it back to life and eventually, it was daily driving material. After the fall of 2023, I thought maybe I needed some kind of more fuel efficient vehicle to get me to and from school, sports, work, etc. So I posted it on the internet for $7,000 and hoped someone would notice it and appreciate it for what it was. Eventually I got a trade offer for a 1996 Chevy Silverado and it looked too good to turn down. Not knowing what I was getting into, I drove 2 hours away to make the deal and 5 months later, I started feeling loads of regret. So again, I went to the internet and posted this truck for more than I could get for it. A couple weeks later, I got an offer for $4,600 and took it. I had the idea of finding a clean classic muscle car like a Mustang or Camaro and such, until I saw this 1971 Camper Special. For some reason, I saw more potential in this truck than any other car or truck I’d seen on the market. So, I made a lowball offer that to my surprise, he accepted! $3,300 later, I began working on my dream truck. Today, this almost 60 year old truck is still working out its flaws and piece by piece we are bringing her back to her former glory!
