I started with a 1987 Ranger that I had acquired originally for my son about a year and a half ago. He was 15 and looking to get working on something for when he could drive. He messed around with a few things but we realized that this was a project truck far beyond his scope and I really wanted to make sure he had something safe and reliable. He bought a newer Frontier with a loan from the bank of Dad and I bought the Ranger off him for what he paid for it. Then, I got to work deciding I wanted to make a little hunting and bush truck. As projects go, scope creep took over, and I ended up fixing all the rust and bodywork, swapping the ’87 cab to a ’91 frame for the upgraded drivetrain of Dana 35, 4.0 OHV, M5OD and 8.8 which I upgraded with a locker. I turned the interior black from red, kept the ’87 dash which was a chore to mate the harnesses, used the ’91 buckets, and made custom upper and lower consoles and shift floor plate with cup holders. A custom 4-inch lift was installed, with cut and turned beams, and Bilstein shocks. I applied Raptor Liner two-tone paint in gunmetal grey and black. A custom front winch bumper finished the front off nicely. Two huge orders from LMC helped bring this truck to its current state. Needless to say the kid is a bit envious of his old truck, but also inspired, as he has since acquired an OBS Ford truck to work on. I’m sure he will be making his LMC order real soon.
