1950 Ford F1 – Calvin B.

My truck story begins in 1957 when I was 7 years old. My family traveled from NW Oklahoma to Los Angeles in our 1950 F1 pickup. Seems impossible now but our family consisted of my mom and dad along with me, my 5 year old sister and my 9 year old brother. Five people in the cab with a floor shift for three days! I remember it being an exciting fun trip but probably not so for my mom who had to have had one or two of us on her lap the entire time. Dad had installed sideboards with a canvas cover and double decked it. We slept in the back during night stops. Our meals were all picnics beside the road. Later, I learned to drive in this truck. In the 80’s, I decided to restore this truck but after a fast start I lost interest and gave the pieces to a friend’s friend. I have regretted it many times. Recently, I had the opportunity to purchase a ’50 model that had been restored. Except for the straight 6 engine it is identical to the one I grew up in. It has its own story including the restorer using it in his wedding. I am getting acquainted with it now and look forward to making more memories even at my age of 76.
