1973 Chevy K5 Blazer – Jimmy O.
I bought this Pre-Runner style K5 as a toy for playing in the dunes and going to Baja Mexico as part of a race team doing pit support. She has a HO 305 from a mid-’80’s Camaro, SM 465 4 spd and a NP 205 Transfer case. The K5 came with a full cage system, Deaver springs with 5″ of lift, King 2.5 remote reservoir shocks, RPR racing suspension seats, and Crow lap belts. Since purchasing her, I’ve rebuilt the Dana 44 front axle adding 3.73 gears with a Spartan locker and crossover steering. Rebuilt the 12 bolt rear axle with 3.73 gears and an Auburn limited slip. Reworked the shock mounts. She now has 12″ of travel front and 18″ rear. Replaced the brake system. Installed a modified heater box. I’ve added a soft top, replaced the doors with some rust free ones along with power windows and power door locks. Added in a relay set up to drive the power window motors directly from the battery. Installed an auxiliary battery to run my stereo and VHF race radio along with a battery isolator. I’m currently building a 400 HP 350 motor to drop in her to replace the 305. Working on a new cage design that will go down thru the dash as well as connect at the top window frame where the hard top mounts. I’ll be reinstalling the tailgate and adding a swing out tire carrier for the spare. Future mods will include all new electric gages and an automatic with a reverse manual valve body for shifting.
