1972 Chevy Cheyenne Super 10 – Ranald Wick
A Family Affair by Ranald Wick
While returning from a family vacation, my father spotted a dark blue and white 1972 Chevrolet Cheyenne pickup truck at the Joe Romania Dealership in Eugene, Oregon. Dad pulled off the freeway. She was the exact truck dad had been searching for- blue with the white, a half ton, he had to have her. After placing a $2,000 deposit, dad assured him we would return the next weekend to take her home. The next weekend my two brothers and I joined dad to retrieve our prize, as young boys we were elated when dad allowed us to ride in the bed of the truck but under one condition…we removed our shoes.
The years passed and we enjoyed many miles in the Cheyenne. She helped transport material from the local home improvement store to complete mom’s endless home improvement projects. Dad’s truck hauled it all.
For my graduation in 1977, the Cheyenne was given to me. She was all mine! I cannot count how many hours I spend waxing the truck from top to bottom (including the bed!) until she shined. From work to play, she was my trusty rig always turning heads. Sadly she was a complete total when an accident one icy winter totaled both cars with no injuries to those involved. The 1972 Chevrolet Blazer the insurance replaced her with a great truck but not the same.
After years of reminiscing by the entire family, the idea was hatched to restore a 1972 Chevrolet Cheyenne for dad. We found a truck that would suffice for our project in 1998 and began to tinker. Unfortunately between busy family life and business ownership not much time was left over for working on the Cheyenne. After my daughter and her husband moved into the house across the street from my parents, the tuck project kicked into high gear. Bolt by bolt, piece by piece, she was disassembled, replaced, powder coated, sand blasted, painted and the list goes on and on. Countless hours were spend in the garage, many orders into LMC Truck were placed and plenty of laughs later the Cheyenne was restored to her original glory. Her motor rumbled and she pulled out of the garage for the first time and memories streamed in of the years we spent building memories.
Although barely 80 miles are on her since the years since we finished her, the look on mom and dad’s faces each time they lay their eyes on the Cheyenne are truly priceless. Both of their eyes light up and the stories of the time their family grew up with the truck begin.
Thank you LMC Truck for all of your hard work and quality parts that made this dream a reality!
