For Dad

In 1977 my dad bought a new K5 Blazer in brown and white. Two months later, my mom and I were in an accident with Dad’s Blazer. His truck was a total loss. A year later, he bought a silver and black 1979 Bronco. I learned to drive in the Bronco.

As time went on, the Bronco was sold off and Dad always talked about missing his K5.

Just over two years ago, Dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. About the same time, my neighbor, who had a black and silver 1985 K5 in his driveway, decided to sell it. The truck was rust-free but had peeling paint, a tired 305, and a worn out interior. I bought the Blazer and presented it to my Dad as a project we could build together, it was the perfect combination of both his Blazer and his Bronco.

We would circle all the parts we needed in the LMC catalog. We had a lot of fun daydreaming. Dad fought hard but passed a year and a half ago. I decided to build the Blazer as I thought he would want it based on our talks about the truck. I’ve had it painted, put in a new 350 with a good cam/intake/carb, and installed all new exterior trim. I powder-coated the original wheels and have just about completed an interior reconstruction.

I’m sure he would love the Blazer. I can’t imagine any circumstance where I would ever part with the K5. Thank you, LMC. I couldn’t have done it without you.
