1972 Chevy C10 – Jacob F.
How Lucky and Blessed I am
It all started on a warm day in May when I walked up my steep driveway to the mailbox. All that was in there was a sunlight ad (which was our local small town advertisement paper coupons, help wanted ads , etc.. ) I saw an ad that stated looking for young man to do odd jobs around farm good pay and flexible scheduling call Melanie. Hmm… I thought to myself there is a Vislisel RD Just about 2 or three miles down the road I wonder if that’s the Vislisels of Vislisel road? Being kind of depressed and down and out on my luck, also unemployed at the time picked up my phone right away. The phone rang twice then a very pleasant and friendly voice said this is Melanie, I said hello this is Jacob, I’m calling about the farm hand position. I am on Big Creek road, I think I may be just down the road from you, has it been filled yet? Ahh yes big creek road I am very familiar we haul grain past there all the time she replied. We chatted a little while about certain neighbors that we both had known then she said we have a guy coming in tomorrow but we don’t know if he is going to work out as he is only 14 and has extra curricular activities including football that will interfere. So why don’t you go ahead and come on in as well 9:00 am tomorrow as she proceeded to give me the address my heart fluttered with a little nervousness and a lot of excitement as I hung up the phone I yelled hey mom I think I may have landed this farm job!! The lady said it only pays $9.00 an hour to start but it is right down the road how convenient we thought!! The first day went great I landed the position and proceeded to dive right in repairing silos cleaning chicken coops repairing a tractor here and there even cleaning gutters any dirty old job that needed done I was there guy. Just a few weeks in my old Dodge Ram 1500 pick up truck I had bought from my grandpa broke down and it was going to be expensive so I needed a vehicle to get to and from work atleast on the rainy days because I could ride my scooter to work on the nice days being the Vislisel farm was so close. One day My beloved grandma that also happens to live right next door said hey why don’t you tell Jim you need some wheels. I bet he has an old truck or two sitting around ya good idea gram I replied I’ll do that. Jim was Melanie’s husband, owner operator of Vislisel farm and Jim’s tractor vac services wasting no time at all I told Jim I needed some wheels him being the jolly kind hearted soul that he is said sure I ve got a couple old trucks in the shed right over there you can have em both if u want he said. Try and get em going. as I looked at the trucks one was a newer style Dodge Ram 2500 one ton that needed quite a bit of work but the older Chevy sitting next to it that one just needs a gas tank I believe he said. I think it ended up sucking some bad gas and the fuel system is clogged. I responded oh ya I see well I gotta tell ya Jim I like the looks of that Chevy as it is a very pretty green color. And I don’t think I can do all the work to that dodge but a gas tank I can handle. A week or two later he helped me pull it the 2 or 3 miles to my house and that night I pulled the owners manual out of the glove box and didn’t know anything about the model of truck so then I decided to type into google 1972 chevy c10 and after I read several articles about these Chevy c10 half ton trucks called the action line made from 67- 72 I started jumping up and down with excitement. A week later I installed a gas tank and a fuel pump and she fired right up the sound of that engine starting and running was the most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard. As I sat in that drivers seat realizing he had given me a barn find medium olive with dark olive top 1972 Chevy c10 custom deluxe with a v8 350 4 bbl engine and a 350 turbo hydra matic 3 speed transmission which by the way he told me not to touch because he had payed to have it all (gone through) as he put it every last thing was original except for the steering wheel she needs rockers and a couple cab corners bodywork and paint. but she’s a numbers matching vehicle with a meger 67,000 original miles on her making me one of the luckiest and proudest c10 owners to date and I’ll work on her Restoration while enjoying the beautiful daily driver that she is for the rest of my days me being only 33 am truly blessed.[lmc_story_gallery]
