1986 Chevy K20 – Joe L.

Meet “Dommer”. He was bought by my grandfather new in the spring of 1986 and I was with him when he picked it up from the dealership. From that moment on, I was going to own that truck one day. After my grandfather passed, I was able to purchase the truck from my grandmother and I got started restoring it. I tried to save everything and did all the work myself with the help of my sons and a couple of friends, mechanical, body, and paint. After several months, I finally got to call it done when 4 days later, a kid in a stolen car running from the police ran into it and it burnt to the ground. I was devastated and so were many members of my family, this wasn’t just a truck . This was part of our family and contained memories that could not be forgotten. I, with a don’t give up attitude and help from LMC, started over and 2 years later, DOMMER is back!!! Better than before!! My grandmother passed before completing the truck for the second time, but I know both her and my grandpa are smiling down from above.
For all the people that may ask questions, I was able to save the frame, differentials, motor, transmission, and transfer case. Everything else is new ordered through LMC or taken off of donor trucks. I was gifted another 1986 K20 that was my uncle’s truck. That truck also carried a lot of memories, but it had been rolled and was only good for some parts. The only parts above the frame that are original are the chrome inserts in the grille that show the heat from the fire, the back glass that I had not used in the first restoration, and the back bumper that shows the smoke stain from the fire. Let me not forget the handle and hinges on the tailgate… Some new features are the Holley Sniper EFI, Old Air Products A/C, power windows and Locks, and 17″ Pro-Comp wheels. Color matched bed liner and lower trim, and much more that I cannot think of at this time.
Guys and gals, if I, my sons, and a couple of friends can do this to a truck that all thought was lost, you can do anything you put your mind to. Thank you all for taking time to read my story…
