1962 GMC C10 – Steve P.

Dad bought her new in 1962 and put it to work on the farm in Northwest Kansas. She saw a lot of hard use over the years and all 5 of us kids learned to drive in it. In 1998 my daily driver was an 86 Ford F-250 with a diesel engine. Dad wanted a diesel for the farm and I told him I’d trade straight across for the old GMC but he had to bring it to me where I live in Southwest Michigan. Took him about two seconds to say ok. Mom told me later he went right to work to get it road worthy to drive the 900 miles to Michigan. New tires, brakes, belts and hoses. It hadn’t been tagged for the road since 1975 so he had to do that also. A month or so later him and my mom headed my way. Somewhere in Illinois they had a U-joint go out and spent a day getting that fixed. Then the generator failed in Chicago. I drove over with a new battery and we finished the drive home and completed the trade. I drove it for a few months and then put it in storage until I had the time and money to start fixing her up. Life got busy and it wasn’t until 2012 that I had the time and money at the same time to work on her. I should say my wife encouraged me to use some saved up money to get to work on it. My best friend had a garage with room for the job so with his and his wife’s help, and the help of several other friends we tore her down to a bare frame. Building her back up took four years, a lot of money (much of which went to LMC!), and even more patience. In 2018 she was back on the road and looking good. My wife and I took a trip out to the farm in Kansas and surprised my dad when we drove up the drive to the house. I think he still had the smile on his face when he passed away in 2022. I’m glad I finished it in time for him to see it.
